First week back of school was filled with adjusting back to the routines of the classroom and reviewing reading standards and math facts. The students have been hard at work with a few writing activities, especially making sure that we are writing proper sentences with correct capitalization and punctuation. To celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we will be reading a few books about him this week and also creating our own fact book that corresponds with Dr. Martin Luther King's life. January is going to be filled with even more celebration since Lunar New Year is on Saturday, January 25th. Our class will also learn about the Year of the Rat and the cultural traditions of Lunar New Year (a holiday that I celebrate with my family!).
In math, we are moving on to double-digit addition and subtraction and learning how to add/subtract doubles and doubles plus 1/minus 1. Please help your child memorize basic math facts because as we move forward, the math will become increasingly difficult if students do not have single-digit math facts memorized. Making 10s to add is a great mental math strategy to help!
In reading, we are learning about narrators and who create stories. In Unit 4 of our reading curriculum, we are recognizing points of view in stories and understanding characters feelings as well as other details in the stories such as the setting and conflicts. When reading with your child or if your child is independently reading, ask them who the narrator is. This will help reinforce what we are learning in class.
Also, some of the headphones that were provided to students at the start of the year have broken or the wires have come loose. If you are able to donate headphones to our class, that would help us out. Click on our class wishlist to order on Amazon if that is convenient for you. While you are on the class wishlist page, please visit my DonorsChoose page to help support a goal I hope to reach to turn our classroom into a flexible furniture classroom.
Upcoming Schedule:
-Monday, January 20th: No School (MLK DAY)
-Saturday, January 25th: Lunar New Year
-Friday, January 31st: Reading Log Due
-Friday, February 7th: 100th Day of School
